That's a great question. I think we must know that God's desire is for us to live lives of faith. The deeper we go with God the more we long for his vision to be our vision, his mission to be our mission. We are living responsible lives when our lives are lives of faith - trusting our lives to Jesus. Making decisions with Jesus and his mission as our controlling priority - living and dying for the gospel. Does that mean we shouldn't have a 401(k) account? I can't say that for you. Does that mean you should have a 401(k) account? I can't say that for you.
Jesus speaks to this a great deal if we're willing to listen.

I think the machine of modernity has set us up in direct opposition to your point about not needing to "spend our lives chasing security here". I think of my dad's 401K, my grandfather's "nest egg", suburban sprawl, gated communities, nursing homes, large standing armies. They all seem to me as expressions of seeking wordly security.

I think the definition of what would be deemed "irresponsible" is pretty vague. I'm sure myself, Jesus, and Uncle Sam all have different view of what living "responsibly" looks like.

I've often heard that we supposedly need guns to protect ourselves from the other people with guns. I (jokingly) think my dad has a 401k because he is scared we will put him in a nursing home otherwise. I assume people think gated communities from having to make contact with their neighbors.

How do you see the practical application of Christ-like "responsibility" addressing some of these issues? Why should I get a 401k?
